Guide to NBN Lead-In Conduits for New Internet Connections
If you’re building a new home or connecting to the NBN for the first time, or upgrading from FTTN to FTTP, you may need a lead-in conduit (LIC) installed.
This guide outlines the process, timelines, and estimated costs involved in having us handle the conduit installation for your NBN connection.
What is a Lead-In Conduit (LIC)?
A lead in conduit is a PVC pipe that runs underground from the property boundary (usually the NBN pit) to your premises. It allows NBN-approved cables to be installed for internet connection.
When is a Lead-In Conduit Needed?
You will typically need a new conduit if:
-
Your property has never had an NBN service.
- You are upgrading a direct buried copper service to fibre optic FTTP
-
You are constructing a new dwelling.
-
The existing conduit is damaged or non-compliant.
-
There is no direct underground path from the NBN pit to your property.
The Process – Step by Step
-
Site Inspection:
We visit your property to inspect the site, locate the nearest NBN pit, and determine the best path for the conduit.
Estimated time: 1.5 hours -
Service Plan Design and Submission:
Before any excavation begins, we prepare a Service Plan outlining the proposed conduit route and installation details. This is submitted to NBN Co for approval, which is required before proceeding.
Estimated time: 2 hours -
Trenching and Conduit Installation:
We dig a trench (typically 300–450 mm deep), lay the NBN compliant conduit (usually P20), and install sweep bends and draw cords.
Estimated time: 2-3 hours for a simple install -
Compliance and Finishing:
The installation is completed to meet NBN specifications. We supply photo documentation and plans if required to support compliance to NBN Co. -
NBN Connection:
Once the LIC is in place and approved, NBN technicians can attend the site to complete the actual network connection. This is usually coordinated by your Internet provider.
